Laser treatment for spider veins is a relatively new method. During this kind of treatment a laser is applied to the skin directly over the spider veins. The energy from the laser causes the spider veins to shrink and disappear. It should be noted that this kind of treatment works best for small to medium sized spider veins. If you have large spider veins it is probably best to use sclerotherapy to treat them because large spider veins respond poorly to laser treatment. The benefits of laser treatment for spider veins is that it is virtually painless and does not require any sedatives or anaesthetic. There are also no injections!! After treatment your veins will become darker and more visible but they will begin to fade from about 2 to 6 weeks. You may require more than one session of treatment, but in general if you have facial spider veins you can expect a 70-80% improvement after each session, and if you have leg spider veins you can expect a 30-40% improvement after each session. On average you will probably need 3 treatments at 3 monthly intervals. If you have small, medium and large spider veins it is possible to combine laser treatment and sclerotherapy. In this case my advice would be to start with sclerotherapy because this may remove most of your spider veins after the first treatment, and so you may not need laser treatment. This would obviously then reduce the amount of treatments needed and save you some money. Ok, i have told you what laser treatment for spider veins is about, but i think it would be a good idea to tell you what you can expect if you choose to undergo laser treatment for your spider veins. Treatment can take between 15 minutes upto 1 hour depending on the amount of spider veins. Laser treatment is usually performed in a doctors office, so there are no hospital appointments needed here. Laser therapy has advanced considerably and what many studies have focused on is the duration of the laser pulses. The main results of these studies suggests that a longer pulse duration gives better results and less discomfort. How much does this treatment cost? Well you can expect to pay around $100-$400 per session for sclerotherapy and about $300-$450 per session for laser treatment. However you can expect to pay more if your spider veins are extensive and if the treatment is performed by a physician rather than by a supervised technician. Be aware that spider vein therapy only treats spider veins, it does not cure them, so if you are prone to getting them, they may very well come back and require more treatment. |
