Gotu Kola is a centuries old herb used in Indian and Chinese medicine. It is also known as Centella, Centella Asiatica, and Indian Pennywort. Gotu kola has been used to treat many various ailments, and it similar to ginkgo in that it works by increasing blood flow around the body. This improvement in blood flow means that gotu kola has benefits for  us varicose vein sufferers.

I suppose the main question when looking for alternative medicines is does it work? Well i have done a lot of research on gotu kola, to see if it is effective for treating varicose veins and venous problems. There is a lot of stuff written about how good this herb is, mainly from companies trying to sell it, but i was looking for scientific evidence from clinical trials, to get an unbiased answer, as well as trying them myself.

The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine produced an extensive report from 114 experts, to evaluate the most popular herbs and supplements. Each herb was given a rating,  from "A" down to "F". relating  to the quality of evidence from scientific studies. An "A" grade related to strong scientific evidence, "B" related to good scientific evidence, and so on down to "F", relating to strong negative evidence.

Gotu Kola was awarded a "B" grade by the experts for treating venous insufficiency.

Other clinical studies have shown that gotu kola stimulates the synthesis of collagen in vein walls, helping to strengthen and repair them. This ability to synthesise  collagen makes gotu kola useful for healing wounds, both external and internal. You may like to know that horse chestnut was awarded an "A" grade for treating venous insufficiency!

More studies have shown gotu kola to be beneficial in treating ulcers, due to its ability to strengthen the gastric lining, and the protective role it plays against free radicals, which are known to damage cells. Recent cancer research has studied gotu kola, as it has shown anti tumour properties.

Gotu kola may also be of benefit in treating depression, anxiety, anti-aging, high blood pressure, erection problems, and for treating the effects of fatigue, as an alternative to caffeine. It has also been used to treat memory loss, by increasing blood flow to the brain.
