Butcher's Broom is a type of lilly, and is used in the treatment of varicose veins due to its ability to aid circulation by tightening the walls of blood vessels. It can also have a positive effect on vessel wall flexibility, meaning that stretched walls may not  leak blood.

Other uses for Butcher's Broom in treating varicose veins are its ability to reduce itching, swelling and cramps. I know i get infuriating itching in my upper leg due to varicose veins, which can be really uncomfortable. Funnily enough, i never had this itching sensation until i had my operation a few years ago, is this coincidence? I don't know, but i intend to find out!

Butcher's Broom gets its name from the fact that its leaves were tied together to be used as sweeping brushes! Because Butcher's Broom strengthens blood vessel walls it can be used as a diuretic, as fluids will not be lost through these now stronger walls, and will travel to the kidneys and be processed as  urine.

It has been used for over 2000 years to treat many ailments such as urinary problems, kidney stones, hemorrhoids, circulatory disorders, cellulite and  brittle bones. Butcher's broom has anti inflammatory properties and can therefore be used in varicose inflammation care.

The commission E from Germany has approved butcher's broom for use in venous insufficiency and there are many clinical studies that have shown the positive effects of it to treat this condition.
